Mission and Outreach

The session and congregation of St. Mark support several programs that reach out into the local community, the state, the nation, and the world.

White Rock Center of Hope

The White Rock Center of Hope is a non-profit organization providing Emergency Aid and Steps to Self-Sufficiency to persons who live in the East Dallas (TX) zip codes 75218, 75228, 75238, and portions of 75214 and 75223.

Founded in 1988, the Center is supported by a community coalition of over 50 churches, civic and social organizations. Ninety-one percent of all donations go directly to help over 1,583 individuals each month. With only three paid employees, 250 volunteers staff the Center -- giving over 2,500 hours of service each month.

Habitat for Humanity

Several times a year, mission teams from St. Mark help to build affordable housing for families in need.

Previous mission trips for Habitat for Humanity have taken members of St Mark to Vicksburg, Mississippi, the Fair Park area of Dallas, Amarillo, TX, Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Glen Rose, TX and Taos, NM.

Former Gov. George W. Bush inspects a Habitat for Humanity worksite and greets the St. Mark crew.

For more information on local Habitat programs, see the Dallas Habitat for Humanity web site.

Fifth Sunday - Sandwiches at Austin St. Centre

On the fifth Sunday of the months containing five Sundays, the members of St. Mark make sandwiches and bring snacks and cookies to the Austin Street Centre in Dallas.

Members of St. Mark's youth fellowship helped with the sandwich duty in December of 2002. Photos of the trip are at http://www.saintmarkchurch.org/sandwich/Dec02/index.html.

Missions in Malawi, Africa

St. Mark supports Frank and Nancy Dimmock, PC(USA) missionaries to Malawi, Africa through Directed Missionary Support, as a portion of our monthly benevolences to the PC(USA). With them St. Mark supports the Ministry of Hope and the Crisis Nursery.

More information on the Dimmocks, and letters from them are available at:

Their most recent letter is at

The Ministry of Hope is a Malawi based organization, whose Founder and Director is Fletcher Matandika. They are best identified as a Community Based Orphan Ministry.

The Ministry of Hope website is at

The Jesus Loves Little Children Crisis Nursery is a joint project (the first one) between the Ministry of Hope and the PC(USA).

In the course of providing for these many needy children, it became apparent that caring for the very youngest ones is simply beyond the means and ability of the volunteer staff at the community centers and it is beyond the ability of hospital staff to cope as well. Abandoned babies and severely malnourished children simply perish. Presbyterian missionaries, Frank and Nancy Dimmock have adopted four such children and know from experience, that with a high protein diet, love and care these babies can have a chance to live and grow and eventually contribute their unique gifts to society. They have felt led to start the Jesus Loves Little Children Crisis Nursery as a subsidiary of Ministry of Hope. This program is a Christian response to the rising tide of orphaned, abandoned and HIV positive babies in Malawi. It is affiliated with Nkhoma Synod of the C.C.A.P. but is open to all needy children.

Mission Mania - coming the first Saturday in October ...

For twelve years Mission Mania has been the annual fundraiser for our mission and outreach programs. Months of hard work precede one day of blessed madness at St. Mark. The activities include a churchwide garage sale, the raffle of a handmade quilt, the sale of baked goods, snacks, and soft drinks, all to raise money for our missions.

In 2002 St. Mark raised over $7300 to help young people in Presbyterian children's homes, to support missionaries, to deliver disaster relief in the US and abroad, to fund Grace Presbytery outreach programs, and to provide local families with food, clothing, and housing assistance, and much more.
